Sony is a Japanese multinational conglomerate corporation headquartered in Kōnan, Minato, Tokyo that came into the car audio industry with aplomb in 1993 after a 43-year history of audio recording experience, with the XR-U80Z. a control centre for a range of media and a button layout that was based on frequency of use, it was an inventive introduction to car audio. Sony is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of consumer and professional electronic products.

Moving forward to 2003, Sony brought forward a double DIN head unit – This was a double height multimedia device fitted into the dashboard of your car to control the infotainment system which enhanced usability through the large buttons and knobs set around the display.

2007 saw Sony launch an Iconic speaker style, integrating core strength and an overlapping of speaker components that crystalised Sony’s perspective on compelling design and sound.

Looking at today’s car audio range, Sony shows us a concise range of quality products. Sony only has one subwoofer at this time, the 30cm (12in) XS-NW1201 with 300W power output. This shows that Sony exudes quality over quantity and is well worth taking a look.

In terms of speakers, visual design plays as high a part as audio performance with strong line styling across each speaker. Sony offers separated 2 and 3-way speaker groups, or speakers that have integrated components, up to 4-way sets.

Sony has round and oval speakers – the oval offers greater sound due to increased surface area. Power output ranges from 200W to an impressive 450W.

Sony amplifiers are twofold with a choice of 330W output or a powerful 1000W, both with heat controlling capabilities, which again shows that Sony are not flooding us with design options, but speaking to us precisely with carefully constructed product ranges.
